 is actually: "I can't release an image from the current document over the SAME firefox window to have it loaded."

If you drag an image from nautilus into the firefox window, it will be loaded. Also, if you drag an image from the current firefox document into the tab or URL bar, it will be loaded. Further, if you drag an image from a firefox window into another separate window, it will be loaded.
