I did a update-manager -d last night (Sept 22 CST) and it rendered the system useless after the first reboot, I was stuck in this cycle. I don't think Uwe is experiencing more complicated issue, I think a lot of people are experiencing it. I will monitor this bug if you want me to test anything to provide additional information.
