This updated patch is ready for testing; it uses the gafr string as a signature, no build warnings added, finds my metadata using that on both drives.
Of course, it could be coincidence, but then finding some users with the same issue will be needed. I'm going to post to ubuntu-devel once I build this in my ppa.
