I confirm this issue on Hardy. Installing "cm-super" fixed the display issue. After that, the document that Benjamin Redelings added opens instantaneously. However, printing continues to generate a very low quality bitmapped printout.
The problem is there with PDFs created using pdfLatex. I do not have the problem with PDFs generated by ghostscript.
I confirm that the problem is with evince only. No issue with Acrobat Reader.
