I am also experiencing this problem on Jaunty, and I have an Intel chipset and driver. When I run compiz --replace from the command line I get the following output:
Checking for Xgl: morganmay@morganmay-laptop:~$ not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
