Ok, being the impatient type, I downloaded nvidia-graphics-drivers-190 and from Michael Marley's ppa and rebooted. No problems with mutter, so I opened aterminal window, typed "compiz --replace" and was rudely thron back to metacity with the error message "No whitelisted drivers found". Then, in a spark of inspiration / fit of extreme annoyance, I modified /usr/bin/compiz line 304 to return 0 instead of 1, and, again, in my open terminal window, typed "compiz --replace" It seems to be working. Did I just get lucky?

 /usr/bin$ compiz --replace
