I can confirm that on my lenovo X61 tablet, which is also driven by an intel i965 ("Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GM GEM 20090114"). Intrepid was _a_lot_ faster and snappier with compiz running. I mostly see this when texture-fetches are being preformed (e.g. when triggering the expo-plugin, cube-rotation or scale-plugin). According to my /var/log/Xorg.0.log my system is using EXA and not UXA. For UXA to work I would need to use/enabled DRI2, which needs a more current linux-kernel (>= 2.6.29) afaik.
