I have the same bug in gutsy on my sony vaio laptop (MATSHITA DVD), in feisty i were able to write dvd+r:

/dev/dvd: "Current Write Speed" is 8.2x1352KBps.

/dev/dvd: reloading tray
:-( unable to reload tray: Input/output error
