With the new cairo (1.7.4+) subpixel font hinting is broken on OOo. If you go into Gnome System -> Preferences -> Appearance Preferences -> Fonts -> Subpixel smoothing (LCDs). Then the fonts have weird color fringing. As far as I know this is only an issue with ooo-build since upstream doesn't have the cairo patches.
