same problem here with:

ubuntu 8.10 amd64
brasero 0.8.2-0ubuntu1

i insert an empty dvd-r and brasero reports that it has zero size. any attempt at burning therefore fails because of insufficient space. switching the the disk size by hand has no effect other than the displayed capacity.

i can provide more info if needed, but it seems that this is pretty common, so it most likely is not useful.
