Have had a pattern of having Bluetooth radio turned off during boot and until gnome desktop is fully loaded - this has worked fine for 1 week.
This weekend load this stopped "working"
Tried repeated switch off and on after approx 10 attempts Bluetooth would start.
"My device detection also improved when I added the blueman repo. I haven't tried all the dialup/etc functions, but this fixes my "No such device" problem.
Intrepid 8.10 64bit

So followed this suggestion...

Re-paired from the Phone to laptop
Shutdown phone - restarted then Bluetooth worked.
