You know what Henry? I think I faked myself out - I am now unsure whether the pavucontrol did anything - here's what works for me:
You know the Tecra has a single socket for headphone/microphone? I don't actually have a combined headphone /mic plug, but I often plug in my regular headphones. It seems when I plug in my regular headphones, the internal microphone starts working. Weird but I just checked it now and that seems to be what is happening.

Firstly, this in no way removes this bug from being a bug - it's really weird behaviour - maybe you can see if it works the same for you. Secondly, the workaround isn't really a good workaround - if I want to have a Skype conference with my laptop I can't because in order for the mic to work I have to plug in the headphones which disables the speakers....
