I've just upgraded to Maverick and the issue is still there: the internal mic works, while there's not input when I connect an external microphone.
I still have to add "options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba" to alsa-base.conf in order to get any input from an external mic,
This way the mic autoswitching doesn't work, but this gives me a selection box under "gnome-volume-control > Input" which lets me choose either Line-in, Microphone 2 or Microphone 1.
