Thanks for the quick reply. Re. The volume setting - woops. Not sure how or when this happened. However, raising the volume has not solved my sound problems.

I have just tried playing a video with Totem and the sound disappeared after just three minutes. At the same time the video started stuttering. I had this same behaviour at one point with Kaffeine when my system was KDE based. However, some of the other behaviour feels different so I would like to run the system a bit longer to ascertain whether it is the same or just similar.

I should also clarify that since my original post on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/476652 I have changed the system from Kubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 9.10 (Gnome) via a clean install.

If it is the same problem I have a lot more info to post that may help but at this moment I am very much afraid of possibly merely adding confusion to the issue. So please bear with me a day or two while I check a bit further.
