Comment 9 for bug 459982

I just installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic-pae (Since I was connected to the internet while installing xubuntu this time the pae kernel was automatically installed. I hope this was the right choice.) After rebooting 'alsamixer' no longer has a mute option for the microphone output, there is no input source selector for the microphone anymore and neither my internal or external microphone work. I'm also missing the front PCM output, but sound out does work.

I'm going to try almozavr's sugestion above next.
