My file /var/lib/alsa/asound.state didn't exist so I copied the one for Intrepid (same machine) and modified it manually then restored settings using "PULSE_INTERNAL=0 alsactl restore" and it works! But the settings do not survive a reboot. Furthermore, any changes made in the Volume Control Panel does not update the file asound.state so that has do be done manually.

Moreover, pulseaudio is running "native" which gives a distorted system sound and for some other apps like vlc. To get around this I first deleted the native executable in the subdirectory to ~/.pulse that kills pulseaudio running in the background. I finally solved this problem simply by uncomment the two lines

#load-module module-alsa-sink
#load-module module-alsa-source device=hw:1,0

in the file /etc/pulse/default.pa to force load of those audio drivers statically as it seems that "module-hal-detect" does not work properly here. But this is maybe not an issue for this bug report but might turn up to be a consequence of it.
