I get the same basic issue with "sudo aptitude update". It was hanging on one of the package repositories, so I had to ctrl-C it. Subsequent attempt to re-run the command gave me this error:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Couldn't lock list directory..are you root?

Cancelling a hanged aptitude/apt-get/adept operation should be considered a first-class operation that leaves the system in a usable state.
