I didn't have time to read everything here so I'm sorry if I state something already pointed out.

I followed the load_cycle_count discussions about a month ago and using smartctl, I found out I didn't have a problem. After about a week of monitoring the load cycling, the number increased by ~60-70 while in the vicinity of ~40000, or something like that. The numbers here are approximate but on the right order of magnitude. Note that APM was set to 128 and I run the laptop only on AC (battery is almost dead).

Today however, a month later, I noticed some characteristic hard drive parking clicks. Using smartctl I found out that my load cycle count has risen to about 92000 and it clicks at more than 10 times per minute. I immediately set APM to 254, which definitely works, but the issue remains:
My hdd was ok while set to APM 128 (and I have a _week_ of measurements to verify that), and a month later, out of the blue, the same hdd under the same settings is not ok any more.

(note: The only change in my system in the past month was installing the repository updates and some applications in the windows partition. Now in my understanding none of the newly installed/updated packages has anything to do with APM settings of the hdd! In conclusion, I feel this is one of these insanely random, Murphy's-law-abiding, software complexity issues, nobody is going to fully understand, let alone solve, any time soon :). That's what my inherent optimism dictates. But, hey, have fun trying :))
