With the Ubuntu live CD, I don't know. You'll need to talk to the Ubuntu guys to find out why it's not falling back to the vesa driver and if there's a way to force it to do that.

David,

I think that probably it was a mistake to report here the successful karmic-boot and load of X under the MacBook Pro 5,1 which "by default" uses the 9600 Nvidia card and _not_ the integrated 9400 chip.

Apologies, Nikos

I think the error is occurring when xorg falls back on mesa, though I'm not sure. My log is here: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/31135314/XorgLog.txt

Same thing here using 09/09/09 liveCD or alpha5 with a nvidia 9400M in a dell studio 14z.

X fails to start as the video card is not recognized and I end up on a tty login prompt.
My Xorg log looks just the same as David's:
   [...]
II) NV: driver for NVIDIA chipsets: RIVA 128, RIVA TNT, RIVA TNT2,

Note: Workaround using alternate CD to perform install then install nvidia-glx-185 drivers, ubuntu boots just fine.

The fix for bug 385658 redoes how card detection works with -nv and may solve this bug. Please test Karmic-beta or newer and verify if it does.

Actually, it isn't fine. It's booted fine, but the installer is full screen without a window border or anything (I've just tried install ubuntu and not try ubuntu) Is this normal, and if not should I report a new bug?
