I can confirm this. I am not sure now which packages causes it but it is not an only compiz problem since it appears with the vesa driver too. I am going to test another desktop like fluxbox or something like that. I guess it has something to do with the gnome-settings-daemon or the panel.

Another problem is gdm. I have moved the user direcotory and created a new one with write support but after this gdm doesn't login with this user. It just changes the password field back to username field. I guess I have to find/create another bug report for this but I guess it is worth mentioning.
Btw. the same behavior happens with a newly created user.

Because of the date of the update: Maybe you're seeing the effects of Bug #201673? Did your update include a libc6 one?

I guess I have found the problem. Through a upgrading issue I guess some gnome packages were removed.
Could you please recheck if install the package ubuntu-desktop helps?

I'll try reinstalling ubuntu-desktop package and i'll tell you. I have tried using https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201673 and nothing happened.

I have reinstall ubuntu-desktop (sudo aptitude reinstall ubuntu-destop), then sudo apt-get update and sudo reboot and the only thing that changed was the color of the screen that has changed to brown but I can't see the desktop and I can't work with ubuntu.
I am really thinking in reinstalling the previous stable release which is Ubuntu 7.10.

It seems to be a different issue but could you please try these commands?

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Then reboot and maybe you are lucky. Otherwise I would change the driver to vesa and restart X.
Please don't forget that Hardy is an alpha version.
