My incorrect reasoning was that since Fedora and Debian both ship a single image, so it may not be necessary for Ubuntu to ship two. I'm still surprised that Debian does not boot, so it seems there's no official way to install Debian on your system.. I've opened bug https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=744959 for that

I wonder if Fedora 20 fails on your Macbook? If so, it would seem that having two images really is necessary, and both Fedora and Debian are doing it wrong.
