Template and package categorization or grouping

Yes, I think that could be nice to begin with.

I totally support it. My holy grail would be searchable tags, some global (for all languages) and some even local (editable by the team translators).
Please, Rosetta Masters, take a look at this. Some people have even expressed their support for it in the ubuntu-translators mailing list - https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-translators/2007-April/001099.html.

There must be support for multiple tags per template for better grouping. It is not clear from the suggestions above but definitely a must!

if existing scenario prevails, a new translator will end up translation an XFCE application despite himself being aware that he is using Ubuntu and not Xubuntu..

Packages for Translation should be categorised as (1) GNOME (2) KDE (3) XFCE (4) Server (5) Common may be another category like (6) Other where applications like Open Office, Mozilla Firefox will fall...

this should be done for better upstream & downstream co-ordination... and choosing appropriate file for the translation...

As far as I can see, this feature will also be useful for broader categorization, e.g. as already proposed GNOME, Xfce, KDE etc may be used. Further on there might be use for tags corresponding to distribution as a whole, e.g.
* ubuntu: core packages, GNOME-packages, and corresponding documentation
* ubuntu-default-install: what gets installed on the system from the live cd, thus avoiding untranslated parts of interfaces and documentation after install and proper localization of the system installed by default
* ubuntu-mostly-installed-LANG: say, set of packages, which are likely to be installed by the users using certain language, based upon poles, statistics or whatever
may be introduced making more granular and "cleaner" representation of package sets and related translations, which will be very useful in the translation process. By selecting ubuntu one would be able to filter out packages that are specific for other flavors etc. Having such a categorization, one may then introduce waiting factors for categories to drive the translation process.

I don't know how complicate it is but another improvment would be to let each team define it's own group of packages and this group should be the next milestone or the team focus.
