Bug Description

Hello,

I am using Rosetta to translate Scilab.
Since Scilab is a big software, it has been split into modules. Each module has his own translation template on launchpad.
The problem here is that the overview of the translation is everything but useful:
https://translations.launchpad.net/scilab/trunk
If I want to know if a translation into a language X is OK, I have to browse each template...

However, I can see other project which has a better output:
https://translations.launchpad.net/xaralx

Would it be possible to have the same interface ?

Thanks
Sylvestre

I wrote a long comment here but lost it due to a hardware crash. :-(

In a nutshell: I don't think we could show the exact same listing that Xara has with such a long list of templates. That would produce a ridiculously long page; for example, the Xara page shows me 11 translations of its single template.

So is there something else we can do? Our engineering time is limited, so I can't make promises about implementing any of this, but let's look at our options.

For example, I could imagine showing only template names on the release-series page, and then a single overview with, for every language, the full status summed up across all templates. So you'd see the statistics for trunk's translations to French, for example, without any specifics about what's in which template. Of course we'd have to make sure we wouldn't be removing something that was very valuable to other users.

Another option might be to add something to the overview page for a translation. So you might be on the German translation page, say, and under the Description sub-tab you'd see a summary of the status of the German translations of each of your templates there. That is not as useful if you're trying to get the grand overview, but if you want the information from a translator's perspective, maybe it's better.

Could you say how well either of these would address your needs, or maybe add other suggestions?

If I understand from the packager point of view, the first proposal (a single global overview for each language), this would be perfect! The packager is more interested by the global vision, not the specificities of a module.

And the second for the translator would be perfect to.

Thanks for your great reply!

That is the good news. The bad news is of course that we need to find time to do it!

Hello Jeroen,

I would like to know if you made some progress on it ?
If no, it is possible to contribute to Rosetta in order to implement this feature by myself ?

Thanks
Sylvestre

Excellent !
Let me know if you need some testing or feedback !

Scilab is a big user of Rosetta (already 8 languages thanks to launchpad) and we are only using it for the translation !

Is there a dev website where I could see that ?
Thanks!

It will show up on our beta server tomorrow. The address is
https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/scilab/trunk

(just insert ".edge" between "translations" and ".launchpad.net")

I'd be happy to hear any input you've got.

It is just excellent. Exactly what I needed!

I just have a series of minor cosmetic points:

* On https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/scilab/trunk/+lang/fr, not sure that the name "Length" for the second column is the more appropriate

* On https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/scilab/trunk, I would align the numbers on the right of the column. The goal of this is to separate the number from the graphic showing the progress of the language. It would aerate the array (it is very minor)

* Navigation point:
I am here https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/scilab/trunk/+lang/fr , I click on a module. For example "core", on the top of the new page, I get the link "Template "core" in Scilab trunk". Since I am coming the "french page", it would be nice to have the link changed back the previous list (french page).

Otherwise, it fits exactly my needs! Well done!

What do other projects need to do to get this view as well?

I'm thinking of e.g. ubuntu-docs and OpenOffice.org, which still show the list of templates, without statistics -> https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/ubuntu-docs, https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/openoffice.org

All projects get this, but distributions don't get it on sourcepackage level (what you ask about). Ideally, we'll move them to the same view as well, but what they need is for us to do the work :) We'll be cleaning up the mess in the following months with different UIs all over the place.
