I am using a Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop and I too have no sound. When I first installed Ubuntu 7.10, it worked fine, but since each successive upgrade (8.04 and 8.10) there has been no sound. Purely by chance I noticed that when I tried the headphones, the speakers (and headphones) worked. This is the case in both 8.04 and 8.10.
I am using the following;
2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 21:57:00 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
