Milan: Thanks. That seems to have at least partially fixed things, as update-manager and users-admin are now properly prompting for password and allowing access to locked items.

Unfortunately the Unlock button of gdmsetup still doesn't work, but maybe something else is going on there? If I run it from console I get no message when clicking Unlock.
