Performing the following fixed this issue on my Dell 700m with Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix (with all available updates installed):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Now to fix a few other issues including Sound Card Gain... somehow mine is way too loud which is not the usual case :[
