It might be easiest to rule out driver issues (or rule in) by providing some patched clutter packages that provide some additional debugging in this area. It would be cool if we could convince it to save the offscreen hit detection render with a marker for where it thinks the cursor is. It should more or less confirm the gl_read_pixels diagnosis.
