Ah, sorry for the lapse. I tried the installation using a PATA disk, but I again had no luck. I tried formatting the partitions seperately using fdisk and mkfs.ext3. I could mount and write to them, so I tried to use the installer, but it crashed as before.
The installation crashed in the same place as before installing onto the SATA disk.
I ended up doing a minimal console ubuntu install and grabbing myth packages from aptitude. The installer didn't work for me, but I've been impressed by the quality of the actual packages!
