Thomas: according to the wm-spec and the ICCCM, a composition manager must take ownership of the _NEW_WM_CM_Sx selection, and relinquish it on request to another composition manager. Here are the relevant links:

AFAIK xcompmgr (which is the source of the metacity compositor, AFAIU) never implemented that spec.
