Aha! It works again! So after installing the kernel updates that came through the normal system update thing which popped up for me on August 26, '08 - I have been able to get my card working again using the ndiswrapper approach. On my system at least, the bug is fixed, the 2wire router is now doing just fine - and what a relief! (for reference, using 2wire home portal + bcm4312 rev 01 wifi card on 64 bit hardy).
