Right, 503 is the code raised when doing maintenance, because the LOSA set ups apache to return that. The daily edge update is automatic and I'm pretty sure they don't reconfigure apache for the "down for maintenance" page.
The reason is that the automatic is done one app server at a time, so should in theory be transparent to user. Like this bug shows, it doesn't seem to be so.
I think apache returns 502 when the app server closes the connection abrutly or other similar conditions. I'll check with the LOSAs.
