This is an error from Apache. Every day at midnight GMT, edge goes down for an upgrade. During that time requests will be handled by Apache alone, and it won't be able to handle them. Maybe "Bad Gateway" refers to the absence of a Zope server.
The time stamp on the error is close to midnight GMT, so everything fits that theory. Did the error go away shortly thereafter or did it persist?
Before I close this bug I really want to see that 921 bytes of HTML. Can you catch the HTTPError and print out the .contents? I hope it says something like "Launchpad is down for maintenance." That would explain this error perfectly. People get this error on the website all the time, but they see "Launchpad is down for maintance", not "HTTP Error 502: Bad Gateway", so they don't file bugs.
