At this point, I'm much more inclined to mark this "Won't Fix". Lynx is not following a spec or standard browser practice. Benji has filed a bug for the behavior. Getting it addressed would be the best thing to do.

For our own non-X usage, we should move to supporting w3c (bug 523229).
