I think an even better variant of this would be to provide an undo function, and an information message prompting the user to undo if they're not sure this was the right thing to do. That's very hard to implement, though, so a confirmation step for people who aren't project contributers will probably work.

The problem I have with it is that it will make the interaction annoying for those users who legitimately need to change the value. Ideally, I'd like to see if we can solve this problem with a tool less blunt.
