I think it's a mistake to bring in the tiny url discussion here, or to worry about other fixes. Stripping "field" and saving searches in LP should be tracked in other bugs, if they're not already (sorry haven't looked yet). I'm not criticizing the ideas or the discussion, just pointing out that were drifting away from the primary request here.

I think it's fairly easy to do a JavaScript fix, either before submitting the form or on the URL afterwards to make the URL shorter, and we could do this now. It's still a valuable fix, even if it has to be updated after future changes to default search params.
