In Ubuntu, the Origin field records whether the package was copied in from
an external repository (most commonly Debian) or originated in Ubuntu. This
is important information for the notification emails.
It's been discussed in Debian since before Ubuntu existed, and draft
proposals exist.
BTW, could you be sure to solicit comments from ubuntu-devel@ before rolling
the change out? There may be scripts processing these emails, so a change
of format needs to be coordinated.
