We just talked on irc about this - why not use Webservices (you know the stuff with http and soap messages). First of all - port 80 is open nearly anywhere and with soap you have pretty much full control over the error handling. Granted - you have to code both the server and the client (which means AFAIK extending dput/dupload) but you can customize to the process instead of working out some dirty process.
