Comment 80 for bug 187290

before you apply the 3D edge effect, try the following procedure : select the rectangle and apply the menu item Path | Object to Path.
Then make sure the rectangle is still selected and apply the 3D effect.

A lot of these effects require that the object be converted to a path using this procedure
