When Ubuntu changes video mode (switching to a VC, restarting, hibernating, suspending, turning off, etc.), sometimes my laptop hangs with a black with some garbage screen. Keyboard doesn't respond (not SysRq, Suspend hotkey, etc.). The only solution is a hard power-off.

This usually happens when compiz has been enabled, and the last message in Xorg.0.log is "XAA: Evicting pixmaps".

I've seen cases where this last message doesn't even get written in the log file when the laptop hangs, and once I've seen more messages written:
