This bug affects me too, on 14.04 (kernel 3.13.0-46).

However, the curious thing is that it only affects me with the new Transcend StoreJet 25H3 external HDD (USB 3.0) that I got recently. Before that I was using a Seagate external HDD (also USB 3.0) which I was able to safely remove (either using Nautilus or from the command line with udisks --detach). This seems to suggest that the drive itself is responsible for this behaviour.

The Transcend drive has a hardware button which on Windows is supposed to do a quick reconnect for a detached device, or a one-touch backup when connected. On Linux this button seems not to have any effect, but the fact that the drive can go from detached state back to attached state by its own action could possibly be the reason we're seeing this strange behaviour. Perhaps it's not a bug but a feature...
