1) GNOME is a destkop has nothing to do with communication, you can install any application under gnome
2) GNOME is open-source software not a product
From dictionary
product - "an article or substance that is manufactured or refined for sale"
3) There is plenty of documentation
4) Major part of open-source software is a contribution developed by people in their spare time
5) I believe it's of very minor importance what you use or not, or do in your life for the people signed up for this bug issue

Maybe no one wanted to spend time on this feature for a good reason.
