Considering the frequency of this bug and the ease of causing it, I think it would be very bad to automatically remount read-only. Running apps would suddenly stop working in unpredictable ways and the user would be left bewildered, and even unable to save his data before logging out to solve the problem.

What would the purpose of a 0-byte file be? Surely it would be the result of a bug. Converting it to a proper file would restore correct functionality, but dying would cause frustration, inconvenience, and, potentially, data loss. Isn't the Right Thing to do to fix the problem and keep working? Just output a warning to syslog and continue on.
