Charles, from your previous message, it isn't clear that desktop-switcher has caused your problem. It sounds like you tried to upgrade an older version of Ubuntu to 9.04, and for some reason, the installation went badly and took out your x-window. If I am correct, this is not a good thread from which to ask for advice and you should either go to the Ubuntu forum or find a launchpad bug similar to yours. If I have misunderstood and your problem started from trying to use desktop-switcher in a Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix installation, then changing the version of desktop-switcher won't in itself, make your menubar or gnome panel come back. I actually tried almost every suggestion in this thread, including the deletion of .gconfd and .config folders. What finally brought back my menubar and panel was the command I noted a few responses ago:

gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/session/required_components_list --type list --list-type=string ["windowmanager","panel"]

but it might have worked in combination with the things I did earlier.
