I was just thinking about using bazaar for configuration files, and think versioning permissions are something that would be worthwhile. One way for implementing the saving of permissions might be to only save/update/restore them when specifying '--with-perms' or similar. The default behavior could stay as it is now, and therefore would not break existing configurations or introduce all the umask issues as described above when dealing with source code. My two cents.
