I'm attaching a potential workaround. Basically, it adds an extra round-trip request to get the first bytes, in order to avoid the problems with the http proxies.
It, unfortunately, adds an extra round trip for all requests. A slightly better fix would be to do this only if the ranges in question would trigger the bugs in the proxy.
