Bug Description

This computer is running Precise 64 bit upgraded from Oneiric 64 bit.
Sound was working fine until today 5/13/12
Updated with the latest updates and sound does not work.
Computer is dual boot with Win 7, in Win 7 the microphone works fine, so I do not think it is a hardware problem

Tried following instructions using alsamixer, unmuted mic - but it didn't help The maximum I get is a sort of hissing/white noise recorded

No idea why this has stopped working. Skype does not capture sound, Sound recorder does not capture sound. Audacity does not capture anything but a faint hiss.

Followed instructions from here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/990211 and installed pavucontrol - after some messing about it works

Still think this is a bug as a default installation is screwing up

Could you define "some messing about"? because i have the same toshiba r850, and i used pavucontrol, and could not make the internal mic work.

You know what Henry? I think I faked myself out - I am now unsure whether the pavucontrol did anything - here's what works for me:
You know the Tecra has a single socket for headphone/microphone? I don't actually have a combined headphone /mic plug, but I often plug in my regular headphones. It seems when I plug in my regular headphones, the internal microphone starts working. Weird but I just checked it now and that seems to be what is happening.

Firstly, this in no way removes this bug from being a bug - it's really weird behaviour - maybe you can see if it works the same for you. Secondly, the workaround isn't really a good workaround - if I want to have a Skype conference with my laptop I can't because in order for the mic to work I have to plug in the headphones which disables the speakers....

Sorry for getting your hopes up

Does anyone found the issue? Please post it somewhere of so, if not, who can write a piece of code or what I can do to help? I need my mic to be working.

I hit this issue on Mint 16 (which is derived from 13.10, running PulseAudio 4.0), on an MSI X370 laptop, which also has Realtek ALC269VB. I have been able to identify the issue (in a way), and work around it for now using pavucontrol, though it's clearly wrong.

The problem is that the normal capture stream for the "Built-in Analogue Stereo" device is completely distorted, to the point where it appears to be just flat noise with no correlation to anything the microphone captures. It's not truly the case, you can actually hear certain loud sounds when you bump up the capture volume, but they're very, very mangled and unrecognisable. However, the *Monitor* of Built-in Analogue Stereo has perfectly fine, clear sound. I don't know enough about PA to pinpoint the issue, but it shows that the problem is purely in the software and has nothing to do with hardware or faulty drivers. If I were to chance a guess, I'd say it's something like the wrong codec or sample format being output, different than what is advertised. Because the monitor stream collects all data passing through, it has the ability to replicate the capture stream, but is apparently not affected by whatever is causing the ordinary capture stream to mangle its data.

Now, the workaround is to install pavucontrol, and in Input Devices tab set the Monitor of Built-in Analogue Stereo as the fallback device. This will make all apps use that rather than the capture device directly, thus letting you use the microphone. It's ugly as sin and very wrong, but it works while we look for a real solution.

Scratch what I said, the Monitor thing is no solution because it's simply a mirror of what is being played back on the sound card, and it only appeared to help because of how I was debugging it. Still, there's enough distorted similarity between what I *should* be hearing captured and what actually comes from the mic that it makes me think the audio stream is somehow being misinterpreted.
