I rolled back to "empathy/natty" only (plus the few dependencies) and that appears to avoid the problem, with the rest of the system fully oneric. Here's what APT said about downgrading to something that works.

Binoy, that is not enough information. If you can show that empathy-chat is using more than a few percent of CPU, then this bug might be reopened. Be specific. "It" and "slow" is not enough.

I confirm the bug is back in Trusty when using gnome-online-accounts with a GMail account. And, by the way, the same bug occurs with gnome-contacts too. Both workd perfectly a few weeks ago, so something must have broken very recently.

OK, I found the culprit: I had thousands of bogus gmail contacts (created by a bug in thunderbird's google contacts addon). I deleted them and now everything is fine. Sorry!
