Bug Description

SRU Justification:

Impact: Some newer models of Wacom tablets are not supported by the
kernel driver we got. For this reason we got a similar backports module
in Maverick. Just for Lucid the newer in-kernel versions do not work that
well as there has been a lot of multi-touch changes.

Fix: Backported the standalone driver from the Wacom driver project.

Testcase: Without this recent Wacom models (CTT460, CTL460, CTH460 and
CTH661 will not be working).

---

In Lucid and Maverick, the Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch models are incompatible due to out of date wacom source code. Upstream version of the module code appears to fix the problem. Since it is uncertain when a proper fix will be submitted upstream, I'd like to request a backport package that carries the upstream module to be used in ubuntu.

It should probably be noted that the module code is not in the linux source. It can be found at http://linuxwacom.sourceforge.net/

Uh, disregard that. It is in the 2.6.35 kernel.

Per comment #2 I'm marking the linux-backports-modules-2.6.35 task as Invalid for Maverick as the Maverick kernel is already based on 2.6.35. I've gone ahead and added the proper linux-backports-modules-2.6.32 task for Lucid. I'll leave it to the discretion of the Ubuntu Kernel SRU team as to whether they'll consider providing an updated version of this driver in Lucid via lbm. Thanks.

Somehow this sadly fell into the cracks. Sorry. I finally got time to make a test version of an lbm package. It uses the sourceforge driver as the driver from 2.6.35 has multitouch stuff in which relies on a newer input core and that is built into the kernel. The packages are at http://people.canonical.com/~smb/lp606278/. If somebody could try whether this works it would be great (may require to install the kernel currently in proposed as I compiled it against the -25 ABI).

Stefan : thanks for your help. I wish I could test those backports modules, but they are built against kernel 2.6.32-25 which the one in the maverick repositories is 2.6.35-22.

Okay, it actually seems I do not need those because they are already built in the kernel 2.6.35-22... However, I do own a Wacom CTH-661 and it actually doesn't work in Maverick RC. (Bamboo P&T)

Cheers !

Hi Mahendra,

yes I pretty much know that Maverick will not work with those out of the box.
The problem is that there is the seourceforge driver which supports them, but
for some reason this support is not pushed upstream. I checked the most recent
upstream kernel source and it is still not there.

And to replace the wacom driver in our kernel source is not really something
that works out well from a maintenance point of view. And it would also take of
pressure from the people doing the sf driver to push things into mainline.

So the only middle way seems to be lbm. I started the test package for Lucid as
there was some initial request to have additional support for the LTS. Given a
bit of time I may do the same for Maverick, but this depends a bit on time since
we are close to release.

@Henrique, have you tried to install linux-backports-modules-input-maverick-<flavour> (flavour is whatever uname -r has at the end (like generic))?

Yes I did. And, given the number of ppas with updated wacom drivers, I can't be the only one. I am using https://launchpad.net/~doctormo/+archive/wacom-plus which works fine.

Then if the backports-modules package is installed and the tablet does not work with it, it is a new and separate bug. I will close this bug report as the support for the backported driver (at least at some version) is released. There may be newer tablets around that are not supported, but that is a different issue.

For Lucid, this currently seems to be in the kernel team PPA (https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel-team/+archive/ppa) waiting to get to proposed and then out to updates.

I studied the comments on this bug and would like to thank all people who have been involved in getting a patch into the backports modules.
As I would like to purchase a Wacom Bamboo Fun Medium Pen&Touch 2nd Generation, USB, DE (CTH-661-DE) I would like to know if this module works with the linux-backports enabled.
I am on ubuntu 10.04 - amd64.
