Bug Description

Binary package hint: system-tools-backends

1) Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala
2) gnome-system-tools 2.28.1-0ubuntu2
3) When I clicked on the "Click to make changes" button in users-admin I expected a dialog box to pop up so I could type in my password.

4) Nothing happened.

P.S. sudo users-admin in a terminal did make the application pop up fully functional. Just without the "Click to make changes" button at all. Thanks for reading this.

I pasted /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 into a terminal and got this:

pfred1@spot:~$ /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1

(polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:1828): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: cannot register existing type `_PolkitError'

(polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:1828): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed

Then I ran users-admin again with the same results. As my user the "Click to make changes" button does nothing?

I never tried this application before today. The only reason I tried it was because of something I read about PulseAudio and its group settings on some web page. I had another problem earlier that caused me to look for a way to get the sound control back onto my gnome-panel. Long story, if interested see my other bug report.

If they are related I do not know. Sorry I could not be of any more help.

Could you run
/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1
and retry?

Just the grep shows up.

Running users-admin from the terminal is silent, even when I click on the "Click to make changes" button. So it doesn't say much but I will paste it anyways:

pfred1@spot:~$ users-admin

Maybe this is more useful?

Probably not but just so you know I'm not messing with you. This might be of some use?

pfred1@spot:~$ ps aux | grep polkit

pfred1@spot:~$

I thought of it just before I sent the mail off.

Weird. polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 should definitely be running, and though starting it doesn't solve your problem.

What does users-admin and /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 output if you start them in a terminal (the second first), and reproduce the bug?

I had a similar problem, i am running Kubuntu 10.10 and by following the recommendation on this thread I run this command
 (/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1) under root user but i got this errors message

"sudo: /etc/sudoers.d/README is owned by uid 1000, should be 0
>>> /etc/sudoers: /etc/sudoers.d/README near line 21 <<<
sudo: parse error in /etc/sudoers near line 21
sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting" any idea of what i am doing wrongly.

Thanks

QAMARDEEN YASIN MUHAMMAD: You don't experience the same problem, this is not the right place to ask. You have problems with the 'sudo' command, which you seem to have distrubed with manual changes. Please ask for help on the forums.

@pfred1, Or if it is an issue where you have been clicking on the text and not the 'lock' icon next to the text, it is a dup of Bug #697450 . We can dup this to Bug #697450 since it is clearer about the problem.
