I know I might seem silly, but: Do you select Unity session in the login screen?

certainly.

In gdm I choose "Ubuntu Unity Desktop Edition" but start only gnome-panel and docky. The background isnt visible (dont start nautilus).

I launch unity from the shell or from alt+F2 and anyway dont work well.

Did you try what I told in my previous comment about removing session storage?
In any case, nautilus doesn't draw the background, nor the icons in unity. You don't have icons on desktop drawned by design.

for nautilus, yes, it's right.

yep, gnome-shell is in contrast with unity.

I remove all, gnome-shell, unity and mutter, I have force mutter version of this ppa and I have reinstalled only packages of this ppa and not gnome-shell.
now work all.

gnome-shell is in contrast with unity!

Russell Green (r.green) wrote :

Its merely a problem with the compatibility of mutter packages that both unity and gnome-shell depend on.Its not a case of both gnome shell and unity cant work together. I'm going to have a look at this in detail later and try and figure out whats actually going wrong.

Omer Akram (om26er) wrote :

this bug is caused by using a later version of mutter. for example if I install gnome-shell from a ppa it also updates mutter to 2.31.2 so when unity session is started I get a white screen then downgrading mutter packages to 2.90 (from unity ppa) makes unity working again

summary: - Unity session dont start
+ Unity session shows white screen if using a later version of mutter

hopefully this will already be fixed in unity 0.2.7 but as its not in the ppa yet marking this bug confirmed

I have the same issue but my screen shows even less.

When I boot into UNE it shows just a white screen and a mouse, nothing else.

I also have the later version of mutter from the gnome-shell PPA

You should really use the mutter version patched for unity available in the unity ppa for lucid or the one in maverick repo for 10.10

Shouldn't "ubuntu-netbook-unity-default-settings" include 'mutter' (from the une ppa) as a dependency?

I can confirm installing mutter from ppa:canonical-dx-team/une resolves the "white screen" bug.

Lukian, ubuntu-netbook-unity-default-settings pulls in mutter if its not installed or an older version is installed

Lukian, ubuntu-netbook-unity-default-settings depends on unity which depends on mutter as a plugin. It's not related to this bug report.
